Global Outlook for R&D Upbeat

One bright spot in the bleak economic news — global investment in research and development is expected to increase 3.6 percent to nearly $1.2 trillion this year.

According to a new report from Battelle Memorial Institute and R&D Magazine, R&D spending is not only stable, it’s growing and the United States continues to dominate the world in funding R&D as a share of global GDP with China coming in second.

The 2011 Global R&D Funding Forecast was based upon a survey of public and private sector researchers throughout the world. With 130 locations spanning the globe, Battelle, the world’s largest independent conglomerate, has contracts worth $6.5 billion annual for research it conducts with industry, academic and government clients in laboratory management, national security, energy, environment and materials sciences, and health and life sciences.
