Expansion Underscores Surgical Hospital’s Success
When the New Albany Surgical Hospital opened in December 2003 hopes were high that its easily accessible location, attractive setting on a nature preserve and combination of impeccable service coupled with unprecedented physician expertise would result in high occupancy and satisfied patients. Fast forward more than seven years and despite a cool economy, the hospital has proven so successful it has expanded.
The only specialized orthopedic hospital in the Midwest, now owned by Mount Carmel Health System, is slated to open four new operating suites, increasing its capacity by 50%, and 18 new patient rooms, bringing the total number of beds to 60. The new wings allow the facility to provide neurological and orthopedic procedures, now in demand more than ever before because of the aging population.
Recently, Mount Carmel New Albany Surgical Hospital physicians were featured on WXYS –TV 6 touting one of the latest orthopaedic advancements, minimally invasive partial knee replacement. “In 30-40% of people, the outside part of the knee, the knee cap and the ligaments are normal, notes Keith Berend, MD. “The arthritis is confined to the bone on bone area on the inside part of the knee.” With the new procedure, patients can opt to have only the troublesome part of the knee replaced, allowing for outpatient surgery and much quicker recovery time.
