    A. Brian Dengler | Dengler Legal

    Brian Dengler has been ranked as among the “Best Lawyers in America” in Information Technology since 2013 and is a former Vice President and Chief Counsel for AOL Inc. and CompuServe Interactive Service. He helped draft and sought passage of state laws authorizing the use of electronic contracts in Maryland, Ohio, and Virginia. Mr. Dengler has practiced information and digital technology law for over 20 years and currently teaches Entrepreneurship and Entertainment Law at Otterbein University.

    His law firm, Dengler Legal LLC, has offices in Columbus and New Albany to focus his practice on emerging digital and health technology businesses. Mr. Dengler regularly speaks on topics of content marketing, information technology, and law pertaining to startups for the New York Bar Association, Practicing Law Institute, and the Ohio State Bar Association.

    Brad Griffith | Buckeye Interactive

    Brad Griffith founded Buckeye Interactive after several years of consulting and developing web applications in-house for companies including JPMorgan Chase, QUALCOMM, and the Go Big Network. Brad earned a BS in Electrical & Computer Engineering and an MBA from The Ohio State University. He will answer your questions about website performance, speed improvements, and best practices.

    Kevin Hammond | Ohio Small Business Development Center

    Kevin Hammond has been a business management consultant for 13 years, mostly focused on small businesses and start-ups. Kevin has been on the SBDC team for almost ten years as a consultant. Prior to consulting Kevin was in financial services at Chase Manhattan. Kevin has an undergraduate degree in Business Administration from Ohio Dominican University and an MBA from Capital University.

    The Ohio SBDC is part of America’s SBDC national network comprised of over 1000 Centers across the U.S. including 28 in Ohio. The Ohio SBDC Network provides one-on-one advising, by Certified Business Advisors, at no cost and conduct no or low cost business training.

    Scott Daly, Focus 3 will present the Adjust & Adapt session June 7, 2017, 7:30am – 9:00am at the McCoy Center for the Arts, 100 E. Dublin Granville Road, New Albany, Ohio 43054.

    Scott Daly is a 13 year veteran of the United Navy SEALs, a Chief Petty Officer, and a Master Training Specialist. In addition to operating on active SEAL teams, Scott spent years training junior officers and enlisted SEALs how to perform at elite levels physically, emotionally, and tactically in the world’s most demanding environments. His military experience allowed him to coach and train people in over 15 countries on 5 different continents. Before joining the Navy after 9/11, he was a highly successful salesman for five years in corporate America. As part of the team at Focus 3, Scott now works around the globe with organizations and teams in industries like healthcare, insurance, law, sports, education, and many others. Through his military and professional experience, Scott shares a unique perspective on Focus 3’s system. With passion, he conveys the value of critical decision-making and a systematic approach to leadership, culture, and behavior, for the ultimate purpose of producing exceptional results. Born and raised in Ohio, Scott is a graduate of The Ohio State University and currently resides in New Albany, Ohio.

  • 2017 WELD National Leadership Conference

    In partnership with Otterbein University, WELD will be conducting its annual national leadership conference on Wednesday, June 7, 2017.

    The conference will be hosted, at Otterbein University in Westerville, Ohio (Columbus). With the unveiling this fall of the new STEAM Innovation Center, The Point, the theme of this year’s conference is innovation. This all-day event will begin with a keynote presentation and breakout sessions will follow for the remainder of the day.

    For the first time this year, the conference will feature “Full STEAM Ahead,” a girls’ track for young women grades 6-12. The young attendees will join the women in the morning for the keynote panel before breaking off to engage in an interactive STEAM-based leadership program. During the day, the girls will collaborate in teams on social innovation projects through hands-on, creative experiences in Otterbein’s robotics, engineering, 3D printing, art, and computer studios. At the end of a day’s work, they will have the opportunity to present their projects to conference participants at the inaugural Full Steam Ahead Showcase and Reception. The girls’ track is free!

  • Coding for the Rest of Us: What It Is & Why It's So Important to So Many Businesses

    Part of our TIGER Talks series:

    There are lots of ways to use computers and computing without building custom-coded solutions, but sometimes the only path to your goal leads to the door of custom development.

    We’ll look at the range of tools that are available to “build” things without doing custom development, and then talk about the situations that require custom coding and how businesses can benefit along with the people they serve.

    John Fulton is a C# instructor for Tech Elevator, a Columbus coding bootcamp.

    John has spent over 35 years as a professional developer, programming on a wide variety of systems from large mainframe computers to desktop computers and web-based systems. In addition to earning both Bachelors and Masters degrees in computer science, John has a Masters degree in Cybersecurity. He taught Computer Science for over 10 years as an adjunct faculty member at Franklin University. Recently he spent a month teaching computer algorithms as a visiting scholar at a college in Muscat, Oman.

    Through his career, John has always been the “go to” guy when others needed an explanation for technical topics. In addition to his time teaching beginning programming students at Franklin, John has acted an a mentor and resource person for many programmers and people who wanted to become programmers. A committed tinker, John’s workbench is packed with the small robots that he uses to teach the Robotics Merit Badge for a Boy Scout Troop where he is an Assistant Scoutmaster.

    John holds two patents for a user interface for banking, bill paying, and shopping. He has acted as an expert witness and consultant in several court cases concerning banking technology.

  • Startup Grind Columbus Hosts Vic Thorne, Broadline Capital

    Victor Thorne brings a background of both investment and operating management experience, spanning Fortune 500 corporations to entrepreneurial ventures. He is Co-Founder of Broadline Capital, a global investment management firm. In 2008, Broadline Capital received the industry award for Asia Venture Deal of the Year, named by Private Equity International (PEI) for the firm’s investment in China Risk Finance, mainland China’s largest online consumer lending marketplace based on number of loans issued, serving online users and China’s emerging middle class, mobile active consumers.

    In 2000 Victor co-founded the leading provider of supply chain management and intelligence solutions to the trillion-dollar food system. Creating the industry’s first SaaS electronic supply network, the company became an innovator in the automation of core business processes. Today the resulting company’s robust and secure transaction engine facilitates the conversion of traditional paper-based processes into more than $250 billion of automated e-commerce transactions for more than 100,000 manufacturers, distributors, and retail operators throughout North America. In 2007, the resulting company was sold to Accel-KKR and Abry Partners.

    Victor began his career at Morgan Stanley, has consulted for Lucent Technologies’ Supply Chain Networks before returning to Columbus in 2010 to serve at TechColumbus (now Rev1) as the managing director of the Ohio TechAngel Funds, the largest angel investment network in North America, and then as managing director of strategic initiatives at Columbus 2020. He most recently worked at Pillar Technology as an innovation vanguard. Vic recently jumped back full time into entrepreneur mode and has launched new businesses in analytics and agribusiness.

    He received his AB in biological anthropology from Harvard College and received his MBA from the JL Kellogg School of Management at Northwestern University. He also participated in Harvard Business School’s Executive Program on Supply Chain Management. He serves as a member of the Boards of Directors of several technology companies in Central Ohio, the Board of Trustees of the Columbus Academy. While in Chicago from 2000-2010 he served on the Executive Board of the Chicago-based non-profit Jobs For Youth and as an Entrepreneur-in-Residence for the Chicagoland Entrepreneurial Center.

    Victor has traveled to 33 countries in 5 continents and has participated in archaeology research projects in Kenya, led a global marketing project for global vineyards and wineries in Chile and Argentina, scuba-dived in Barbados and climbed the Great Wall of China. Victor’s mission is to grow Ohio’s reputation as a preferred and optimal location for the world’s most promising entrepreneurs to launch and grow their innovative ventures into profitable and sustainable world-class enterprises.

    New Albany resident Lisa King is the CEO and Founder of Brownie Points.  The Columbus-based company has earned national renown for its gourmet brownies and popcorn – including features on The Today ShowGood Morning America, the Rachael Ray Show, Fox News and the Food Network.  From Brownie Points origins in King’s Cleveland kitchen to its 5,500-square foot facility in east Columbus, Brownie Points has survived being sold, bought, sold again and starting over from scratch.
