Technology Tools for 21st Century Education

Students attending New Albany-Plain Local schools have access to technology that even high-tech companies would envy. The advanced fiber optic infrastructure that benefits the Village’s corporate residents also helps our youngest residents learn. “We see daily, an increase in the use of digital information and media to support a 21st century curriculum for any time, any place learning. The village fiber optic network has allowed the district to increase Internet speeds in excess of 60 times and this includes a direct video connection with The Ohio State University for distance learning and with COSI and Mount Carmel Health for K-12 programming,” says Jon Stonebraker, the district’s technology coordinator.

From labs that allow students to design computer networks, develop programs and produce videos to wireless technology for the upper grades, the schools continue to place a premium on technology. In fact, New Albany’s use of technology is so advanced that a dedicated team of technology-loving students called Digital Network Assistants (DNA) that design, build and maintain technology equipment and solutions throughout the campus have showcased their “best practices” around the country.

Recently, two DNA members, Katherine Miller and Hayley Montgomery, received awards for Aspirations in Computing from the National Center for Women and Information Technology. Innovate New Albany, the city’s incubator for technology startups, entrepreneurs and small businesses, features 16,000 square feet of space within the New Albany Business Park’s Signature Office Building, 8000 Walton Parkway.
