Max Brickman knows the startup ecosystem backward and forwards. By the time he could drive, he had seven employees, 300 accounts, and a buyer lined up for the commercial landscape design business he founded just a year before. That same year, at just 16, Max founded his second company, Peloton Investments. In between classes, he spent his high school and college years raising over $30M from investors and banks to acquire 450 Class-A/B residential apartment units.
By 21, his third company, CleanSlate, was already gaining steam. After seeing how prevalent exam cheating was at his school, Max chemical engineered a paper that would allow students to take an exam normally, while the paper appeared black to a neighboring student. Not quite three years later, he licensed CleanSlate to an international organization, and Max checked “sell two companies” off his to-do list.
And then Max did the most logical thing a 23-year-old would do after successfully founding three companies in seven years: he launched a venture capital firm. Max is now the Managing Director at Heartland Ventures — a venture capital firm designed to connect technologies on the coasts to Middle America corporations. To date, Heartland has invested in six portfolio companies, facilitated over 114 startup connections for Middle America corporations and created over $65 Million in pipeline revenue for its portfolio companies.
Max and his tale are still young, but he has endless stories to tell, successes to share and challenges he has learned from. In this presentation, he’ll share his journey, how he overcame challenges and how he became known as a serial entrepreneur and venture capitalist by age 23.
Max is Founder and Managing Director of Heartland Ventures. While pursuing his BS from the Indiana University Kelley School of Business, Max served as CEO/Founder of both CleanSlate and Peloton Investors, from which he gained valuable domain and entrepreneurial experience, as well as a deep understanding of Midwestern business trends and practices.
Through the process of inventing, designing, and marketing, Max was able to patent and license CleanSlate, a technology that prevents cheating on written exams. Prior to developing CleanSlate, Max founded Peloton Investors, a Milwaukee-based real estate investment firm, which he grew to 450 residential units. Max also led the acquisition of a ten-employee Midwestern construction company, which subsequently experienced 20X revenue growth.
Max serves on several regional boards designed to increase per capita income and entrepreneurial activity. Max has received national recognition for his achievements and community impact. He was awarded an Edison Award in 2017 for innovation, received 1st place in the national Recess pitch competition, and placed 1st in the Indiana University IDEA Competition. In addition, Max was nominated as an Indiana Rising Star for enhancing the state’s entrepreneurial growth and competitiveness.
