It’s also understandable that community leaders believe that successfully attracting equity investment is essential for growing their local economies. In this TIGER Talk, our presenter Daniel Isenberg, PhD, will offer a different perspective for business leaders and economic development professionals to consider.
For over a decade, Daniel’s organization, Scale Up Ecosystems has developed and deployed a practical and broadly applicable alternative for driving company and community growth, “the 3C Scale Up Model.” By focusing smartly on quick wins, building customers, capacity, and cash, a much broader base of local firms can kick start new growth trajectories, with powerful spillovers into the local economy.

For 40+ years, Daniel Isenberg has been highly engaged in a career distinguished by visible leadership roles in world-class organizations that have brought positive economic impact to communities across the globe. Daniel’s accomplishments include those as a university professor, author, policy advisor, investor, and entrepreneur.
Professor: Currently at Babson College (Boston) and Columbia University (New York). Earlier, Dan invested 11 years at the Harvard Business School where he created the course International Entrepreneurship. He also designed and led the school’s first International Immersion Programs on entrepreneurship to Israel and India. His many other teaching roles include spans at Harvard’s Kennedy School, Insead (France), Reykjavik University (Iceland), and the Technion (Israel).
Author: Daniel’s book, “Worthless, Impossible and Stupid: How Contrarian Entrepreneurs Create and Capture Extraordinary Value” was published by the Harvard Business Review Press in 2013. This work describes how entrepreneurs create and realize extraordinary economic value. Daniel is also the author of two Harvard Business review feature articles: “How to Start an Entrepreneurial Revolution” (2010) and “How Senior Managers Think” (1984). Many of his 35+ print and digital HBR articles have advocated for placing greater policy and practice emphasis on scaling up established companies.
Policy Advisor: Since 2004, advised senior policy groups in over a dozen countries, including Brazil, the UK, Israel, Denmark, Colombia, United States, Mexico and Canada. He’s also spoken on entrepreneurship policy with the G20 YES, World Economic Forum, the European Commission, and has advised the White House.
Investor: General Partner in one of Israel’s first wave of venture capital funds (JVP), and since 1990, Daniel has invested privately in 40+ startups. He is also an LP in three VC/PE funds.
Entrepreneur: From 1990-2004, Dan was the founding CEO of a global venture based in Israel. Currently, Dan is Founder & CEO of the organization Entrepreneurship Policy Advisors which launches, runs, and advises Scale Up Ecosystem Projects. Examples of these projects include:
