Girls with Gears Gearing Up for Pelotonia Cycling Event
Once again, Girls with Gears, a New Albany-based riding group or peloton made up of women business leaders and residents is coming together to raise money for cancer research through their participation in Pelotonia, a grass roots bicycle tour to support cancer research at The Ohio State University Comprehensive Cancer Center – Arthur G. James Cancer Hospital and Richard J. Solove Research Institute.
The New Albany peloton is poised to exceed the $50,000 they raised last year when they complete the ride slated for August 10-12. They’ll be on familiar terrain as two Pelotonia routes are ending in the cycle-friendly city that features more than 75 miles of leisure trails.
Lisa Hinson, the Girls with Gears captain, notes on her Pelotonia profile page that anger fuels her passion to ride after learning about a young child who lost her battle with cancer. “As a third year rider, I can say unequivocally that my commitment to this effort grows deeper and more emotional each time I’ve successfully crossed that finish line. You learn a lot about yourself, your fellow riders and your community when you get involved with Pelotonia. Most importantly, you learn that we are all in this together, for people we know and love, and for people…we may never have the opportunity to meet. Each day we get closer to new treatment protocols that save lives. More money equals more research and research is what it’s going to take to eradicate this disease.”
