Ohio Jumps 18 Points in Entrepreneurship Index
Ohio leaped ahead of 18 states across the nation in the latest State Entrepreneurship Index, an annual state-by-state ranking of entrepreneurial activity developed by economists at the University of Nebraska, Lincoln.
The increase was one of the largest among any state in the nation. For 2011 Ohio rose from 40th in the rankings to 22nd, beating out our neighbors to the north, west and south. Leading the pack are Massachusetts, North Dakota, California, New York and Minnesota. Michigan ranks in the bottom five.
The index weighs multiple factors, including a state’s percentage growth and per capita growth of business establishments, its business formation rate and the number of patents per thousand residents. The index is based on data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the IRS Statistics of Income Bulletin, the U.S. Census Bureau and the U.S. Statistical Abstract.
