Events Focus on Women in Leadership
WELD, an organization for women and by women that is focused on enhancing the economic status of women, will be hosting two upcoming events designed to help women achieve greater participation in leadership of area businesses, civic organizations and government.
A panel discussion on strategies for women to capitalize on the 2012 election results and create increased empowerment and engagement will take place from 7:30 am to 9:30 am on April 24th at TechColumbus. WELD’s Policy Forum seeks to discuss new opportunities and how women can take advantage of them and the attitudes and structural problems that hinder women’s progress.
Panelists include Dr. Jill Bystydzienski, Department chair and professor, Ohio State Department of Women’s, Gender and Sexuality Studies; Tracy Heard, state representative, Ohio House of Representative; Melanie Martin-Jones, partner, Porter Wright Morris and Arthur and co-founder, Women’s Council of Central Ohio; and TaKeysha Sheppard Cheney, founder and CEO, The Women’s Book. The 2013 WELD Keynote which kicks off the organization’s year-long theme, “Making Your Voice Heard,” will feature Gwen Ifill, moderator and managing editor of PBS’ Washington Week and co-anchor, PBS NewsHour. A calm voice in the chaotic world of political news and rhetoric, Ifill is known for reporting the substance of stories and events and moderated one of last year’s presidential debates. Colleen Marshall, anchor, NBC4 WCMH-TV, will emcee the event, which runs from 5:15 pm to 8:30 pm, March 21 at the Hilton Easton. In honor of Women’s History Month, WELD’s annual Keynote event brings nationally known speakers and leaders to Columbus to advance the dialogue around women’s issues, challenges, and opportunities.
