Scientific American Features OSU’s Fastest Car
The February edition of Scientific American debuted Ohio State’s Buckeye Bullet 3, a vehicle that students hope will be the first electric car to break 400 mph.
According to Giorgio Rizzoni, director of OSU’s Center for Automotive Research, the three fastest electric cars ever built were built by Ohio State students. The first Buckeye Bullet set a U.S. record of 315 mph. Buckeye Bullet 2 set an international record of 303 mph and the Buckeye Bullet 2.5 beat its own record by reaching 308 mph.
The next generation of the Bullet is in the works and the team hopes to reach more than 400 mph – something only nine gas-powered cars have done — by making incremental changes to the design and engineering to reduce wind resistance and deliver more power. The team will get its chance in September at Utah’s Bonneville Salt Flats where the previous records were set.
