Employee Perks Come in All Shapes and Flavors

Mustache Monday, chocolate fountains and air guitar contests aren’t your typical employee perks, but fun and frivolity are finding a welcome home at upstart technology companies where the steep competition for talent results in some unusual activities to attract, retain and inspire staff.

Vacation rental startup Airbnb’s offices feature a two-story indoor tree house and a section of a commercial airplane. Facebook sponsors game day when the entire company plays kickball or Capture the Flag. The online storage site Dropbox has a rock room with all kinds of instruments and an arcade room dedicated to Dance Dance Revolution.

According to Airbnb cofounder Joe Gebbia, creating a space where people feel comfortable spurs innovation. “We’re going to work hard and play hard.” Read the full Wall Street Journal feature or just out this quick video:

Innovate New Albany, the city’s incubator for technology startups, entrepreneurs and small businesses, features 16,000 square feet of space within the New Albany Business Park’s Signature Office Building, 8000 Walton Parkway.
