Largest Walking Event Attracts Sell-out Crowd

Ranked the best in the nation by Walking Magazine, it’s never too early to register for the New Albany Walking Classic scheduled for Sunday, September 11^th.  In fact, according to founder Phil Heit, the country’s largest non-competitive walking event sells out all 3,500 slots each year. The classic which began with a group of walking enthusiasts in 2004 now draws recreational as well as Olympic caliber walkers from across the country.

Featuring a 10K and half marathon, the event starts in New Albany’s Market Square and meanders along a picturesque course through residential neighborhoods of stately Georgian homes surrounded by meadows, woodlands and waterways.

Recently, Phil Heit took a few moments to tell us how the best in class Walking Classic was conceived as well as how the community’s commitment to health and wellness has played a role in its growth.
