New Albany resident and internationally renowned orthopedic surgeon Adolph Lombardi, Jr., MD, has often been in the forefront of orthopedic medicine. The designer of several knee replacement systems, Lombardi also cofounded the Mount Carmel New Albany Surgical Hospital, the only orthopedic surgical hospital in the state.

Now, his surgical expertise, entrepreneurial prowess and goodwill has resulted in his recognition by Business First as one of its “Healthcare Heroes” for Operation Walk USA, the national nonprofit he started that provides hip and knee replacements for patients who can’t afford them. The nonprofit sets up two-day surgical marathons enabling orthopedic surgeons across the country to perform hip and knee replacements using donated operating rooms and medical equipment as well as volunteer healthcare support staff.
