Farmers Market Innovates Healthy Eating
The season has come to an end for the New Albany Farmers Market, but it is a sure bet the popular market will be back next year. In fact, according to Suzanne Lucas, New Albany Farmers Market Co-Manager, it was an instant success from day one when 1,200 visitors showed up to purchase produce, baked goods, flowers and more. Along the way, the all-volunteer, nonprofit effort underwritten by the New Albany Community Foundation as part of its Healthy New Albany initiative has cultivated some unexpected organic relationships.
Retailers from Market Square have purchased the locally grown produce and home baked goods for their establishments while local clubs and market vendors routinely donate food to feed the hungry. “Through its support of the market and our community garden, the foundation makes it possible to be part of something bigger than yourself,” says Co-Manager Suzanne Lucas.
