Columbus Kitchen Incubator to Open Soon
A warehouse in the Franklinton district of Columbus, just west of Downtown, will soon be home to aspiring entrepreneurs with an appetite for food-related businesses.
The opportunity to test recipes on commercial-grade equipment and collaborate with like-minded foodies is the brainchild of Kate Djupe, owner of The Commissary on Town at 610 W. Town St. in a former trolley car station. Instead of the typical technology incubators popping up across the country, The Commissary is devoted exclusively to food products.
Djupe whose experiences as a young mother making her own baby food, led her to seek out commercial kitchen space to test out the concept, but she couldn’t find restaurants willing to rent out space in the off hours. She figured she wasn’t alone and as the growth in community gardens and local farmers’ markets demonstrate, food entrepreneurship seems to be on the rise.
