“Opportunity “Knocks” Even in the Sixth Grade

New Albany sixth graders recently got the opportunity to develop business plans for undeveloped land at Market Square through a school pilot program called “Opportunity Knocks” designed to help build critical thinking and problem solving skills among students.

Three sixth grade teams made up of five or six students took on roles such as chief executive officer, product developer and marketing director to come up with a business on six acres of land at the corner of Johnstown Road and Market Street. The businesses, ranging from a dog park to a sports training facility, were reviewed by parents and community volunteers who selected five of the best projects. A panel of business and community leaders chose two of the finalists as best plans. The winners were an Italian bakery and a recreation center.
