The Top 10 IP Mistakes Startups Need to Avoid
November 8 @ 11:30 am - 1:00 pm
| TIGER Talk
The planning necessary for a successful new company and product is immense. With all of the financial plans, marketing strategies, and product development etc., entrepreneurs often neglect what is one of their most important steps: protecting valued assets through proper application of intellectual property (IP).
IP issues are often what slow down or stop venture capital deals, loans, and acquisitions etc. because the proper steps were not taken early in the life of the company. There are many potential IP traps and some mistakes CANNOT be corrected when the appropriate steps were not taken on a timely basis.
In this TIGER Talk, Atty. Rick Mescher of Porter Wright will present ten of the most common IP mistakes and propose solutions. While this list is not exhaustive, it is a starting point so that you think about IP from an early point on your way to success! We will discuss various aspects of patents, trademarks, copyrights, trade secrets, and contracts.
Rick Mescher is a partner at Porter Wright in Columbus, and his practice involves all aspects of IP law with the focus being on patents and trademarks. His clients range from local startups to global corporations.
Rick has been an Adjunct Faculty Member of the Ohio State University Michael E. Moritz College of Law since 2006, and he currently teaches patent preparation and prosecution. Prior to law school, Rick worked as a design engineer in the aerospace industry.
