Columbus Idea Foundry to Relocate to Franklinton
The Columbus Idea Foundry, home to more than 100 members, including independent, small businesses that share workspace, tools and technologies will be relocating to a former motorcycle warehouse on Columbus’ west side.
The for-profit foundry teaches people new skills and provides the tools and technologies that entrepreneurs, artisans and artists need, including a conventional woodshop, metalworking, welding and blacksmithing stations. It also offers technologies that would be out of reach in cost for small businesses such as a CNC ShopBot, laser cutter and engraver and 3D prototyping printers.
Its fine art stations feature jewelry-smithing, screen-printing, warm glass shop and a privately operated dark room. The foundry and its members also design and build products for consumers and businesses, including personalize merchandise.
U.S. ArtPlace America, a consortium of 13 foundations and six banks recently awarded the Franklinton Development Association a $350,000 grant to support the renovation costs.
