Who are your customers, suppliers, and competitors — and what motivates them? That knowledge is essential information for making smart decisions and conducting successful business meetings and presentations. But it’s complicated, unwieldy, and hard to keep everything straight, defying mere checklists and cheat sheets!

Our TIGER Talk presenter Tom Rutledge understands this very well — first from his lengthy career on Wall Street, then as an angel investor, and always as an advocate for better business communication. These experiences led Tom to create a visual tool to organize and simplify any company’s network of customers, suppliers, and competitors. Tom has named this tool “The Scape.”

Tom will present the story of how he became an advocate for Scapes, how Scapes could have helped certain well-known businesses in history capitalize on opportunities and avoid mistakes, and how Scapes can help you in your own business and career decisions.

Tom Rutledge is a 30-year finance professional who has recently moved to the operating side, joining mobility start-up Wapanda in January 2021. After twenty years as a Wall Street dealmaker with Merrill Lynch, Deutsche Bank, and JPMorgan, fifteen years investing personally in start-ups, and twelve years as an institutional money manager at Magnetar Capital, it was time!

Prior to his finance career, Tom was the New England business reporter at WBUR, the NPR affiliate in Boston, and won a New England Press Association award for feature writing. Along the way, he created and taught Boston College‘s Derivatives and Risk Management course in BC’s finance department, served as board chair for GiveWell.org (a charity evaluator backed by Facebook co-founders), and was a one-day champion on Jeopardy!

Tom currently lives in Boston but grew up in Columbus, graduating from Columbus Whetstone High School, and later earning a BA from Amherst College and an MBA from the MIT Sloan School of Management.
